“We plagiarized your plagiarism so we might put plagiarism in your plagiarism.”

Gentle Launch

Elon Musk’s Grok AI was already having a tough launch, with the bot trashing Musk and cosigning a bunch of progressive political causes which are anathema to the more and more regressive entrepreneur.

Now, add one other woe to Grok’s rocky debut: customers are noticing that it appears to be cribbing from its direct competitor ChatGPT, which is made by Musk’s former pals and current enemies at OpenAI.

In response to at least one question, as an illustration, Grok made a startling admission: “I am afraid I can’t fulfill that request, because it goes towards OpenAI’s use case coverage.”

Keep in mind, OpenAI did not make Grok — Musk’s xAI startup did, no less than in idea. So what is going on on?

Excuse Goose

An xAI engineer named Igor Babuschkin shortly weighed in to supply an evidence.

“The difficulty right here is that the online is stuffed with ChatGPT outputs, so we by chance picked up a few of them once we skilled Grok on a considerable amount of net knowledge,” he wrote. “This was an enormous shock to us once we first seen it.”

Whether or not or not that is true, it is more and more nicely established that weird stuff does start to happen when AI is skilled on the outputs of different AI. And it is not the world’s least believable excuse, both, as a result of we have already seen Google’s AI vacuuming up and regurgitating the work of ChatGPT.

“For what it’s value, the difficulty may be very uncommon and now that we’re conscious of it we’ll guarantee that future variations of Grok don’t have this drawback,” Babuschkin continued. “Don’t fear, no OpenAI code was used to make Grok.”

If that seems like there wasn’t a lot testing on Grok earlier than releasing it to the world… nicely, sure. As such, observers have been fast to pull the excuse.

“We plagiarized your plagiarism so we might put plagiarism in your plagiarism,” quipped NBC Information reporter Ben Collins.
