The brand new sponsorship offers come at a time when an increasing number of followers are jostling for a return of the workforce’s deserted nickname. Tens of hundreds have signed a petition, an effort sparked by the nonchalant use of the dictionary-defined slur by Josh Harris and restricted associate Magic Johnson within the aftermath of the approval of the sale.
Whereas Harris and Johnson might need been floating a trial balloon, the embrace of the deserted title may complicate new and current sponsorship relationships. None will drop the workforce for not bringing again the previous title; if the previous title returns, some may.
Whether or not they meant to do it or not, Harris and Johnson resurrected this particular skirmish within the broader tradition wars, mobilizing proponents of the previous title who insist that the title is not a slur and that Native People aren’t, or should not be, troubled by it.
