Life cycle diagrams are ubiquitous in science textbooks, and so they could also be due for some updates, in response to a brand new examine.

The findings present that straightforward design modifications in science textbook diagrams can have a dramatic impression on the power of undergraduate college students to grasp key biology ideas.

“We have been shocked by the examine outcomes,” says Jennifer Landin, an affiliate educating professor of organic sciences at North Carolina State College and corresponding creator of the examine printed within the journal Education Sciences.

“Making two small changes had a profound impression on the power of faculty college students to precisely reply questions associated to ecology and evolution.”

For the examine, researchers enlisted 684 undergraduates and gave every examine participant one in all three totally different life cycle diagrams and requested to reply six questions associated to an organism’s evolution and the survival of its offspring.

One diagram was the “conventional” format, exhibiting the life cycle as a circle with the organism producing a single offspring. A second diagram confirmed the life cycle as a circle, however gave the organism a number of offspring. The third diagram gave the organism a number of offspring, however introduced the life cycle in a linear format, shifting from left to proper.

On questions on offspring survival, the researchers discovered that college students who got a diagram exhibiting a number of offspring scored 28% to 30% greater than college students who had the diagram exhibiting solely a single offspring. And college students who obtained the linear diagram scored 19% to 30% greater than the opposite college students on questions on evolution.

Total, college students who obtained the linear diagram with a number of offspring earned the very best common rating—answering 54.5% of the questions appropriately. College students who obtained the standard diagram—a cyclical structure with a single offspring—had the bottom common rating. They have been solely capable of reply 26.1% of the questions appropriately.

“There are a few examples that underscore how highly effective the impact of design could be,” Landin says. “For instance, a standard false impression amongst undergraduates is that every one offspring survive to maturity. We discovered that 30% of examine members who obtained the standard diagram with a single offspring answered with this false impression. However solely 3% to five% of members who obtained diagrams exhibiting a number of offspring thought all the offspring survived. That’s a significant distinction.

“One other instance is the widespread false impression that offspring are similar to their mother and father, after we know that youngsters even have totally different traits from their mother and father,” Landin says.

When researchers gave examine members diagrams with a cyclical format, 68% to 78% of these examine members thought offspring would have similar traits to their mother and father. However of the examine members who obtained the linear diagram, solely 38% thought offspring would have similar traits to their mother and father.

“This is a vital idea for biology college students, and the format of those diagrams seems to make a giant distinction in serving to college students grasp that idea,” Landin says.

“This examine suggests textbook publishers can enhance pupil understanding of key ideas by revisiting the design of those life cycle diagrams. Moreover, our findings recommend there could also be worth in finding out the design parts in different life science diagrams to see if we will make them more practical educating instruments.”

The Provost’s Skilled Expertise Program at NC State supported the work.
